A journey into the Piedmont and its big and robust Barolo wines offers an exciting and enticing autumn adventure. This full-bodied, intense red wine made from the noble Nebbiolo grape requires decades of bottle-ageing to attain perfection and its characteristic velvety smoothness. In Castelletto di Monforte d’Alba, where Barolo originates, surrounded by ancient hills and deep silence, the Saffirio winery has created a model approach to wine travel. The Gold Wine Experience is a journey through five vintages of Barolo and is tailor-made to this celebrated wine. The five vintages from 1978 until 2020, selected from the estate’s historical reserve, offer a journey through the soils, the seasons and the evolution of this wine. Meanwhile the estate’s Barolo Experience tells the story of the Saffirio family and is a discovery of the four different interpretations of Barolo that the house makes today with the single grape wines of Castelletto Persiera, Ravera and Perno, and the Barolo Riserva Millenovecento48. It’s a unique opportunity to enter the heart of the winery, touch the raw materials used to create the wines and gain an in-depth understanding of what it means, still today, to be the keepers of an iconic appellation. A selection of charcuterie and cheeses accompany the tasting experience. Meanwhile from April to October the estate offers a “Pic Nic” in the vineyards. When the guided tour of the cellar and tasting of four different labels is over, guests are given a lunch box for two, complete with a bottle of Barbera d’Alba Superiore and a corkscrew featuring the Saffirio logo. You head out into the vineyards and choose your picnic spot. The 200-year-old Saffirio winery is part of Brave Wine, the wine holding company founded by entrepreneur Renzo Rosso. ©Trish Valicenti for The Gourmet Gazette
