Paris, France — Paris Gallery Weekend is in full swing until May 31st as 73 havens of art of all kinds open their doors to the public. Wandering from the Marais uptown to the Matignon district and of course Saint-Germain-des-Prés, internationally known artists are all on the agenda and special shows pay tribute to Picasso, Joan Miró and Sonia Delaunay.  The Paris Gallery Weekend is an initiative of the Comité Professionnel des Galeries d’Art (The Professional Committee of Art Galleries) whose French acronym is (CPGA). It is being held for the 13th time. Many of the exhibitions extend beyond the weekend and offer another way to enjoy or collect art in Paris.

Highlights include the Nabis show at the new Parisian venue of the famed London gallery Waddington Custot. The house’s inaugural exhibition, entitled the Nabi Shock, is running through to June 6th, and reaches into the realm of the gallery’s widely recognized expertise in the movement. This pioneering movement embraced a style characterized by flat areas of bold, embracing and liberating colors and heavily outlined surface patterns and included Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis and Édouard Vuillard many of whom were students at the time in Paris. Their name, the Nabis, is derived from a Hebrew term meaning prophets reflecting both the group’s spiritual quest as well as the innovative ambitions of the group.  The show at Waddington Custot brings together some 30 works by Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, Édouard Vuillard, Charles Filiger, Ker-Xavier Roussel, Paul Sérusier, Émile Bernard, Paul Ranson  and József Rippl-Rónai.
