This is rich aromatic 100% arabica coffee at its finest. The Italian house of San Marco has just brought out a new coffee combining carefully selected beans from coffee plants in Brazil, Honduras and Mexico. The house launched Terra Mia last March 11th. Terra Mia, My Earth, as the new coffee is called, is also a component of sustainable development for the house of San Marco has made the commitment to restore eco-systems in Latin America in collaboration with Reforest’Action and is participating in 4 reforestation programs by making the commitment to replant 7,000 trees. Some 2.000 in the Brazilian Amazon to reforest this highly deforested land are on the agenda as well as a program in the Veracruz region of Mexico where 2000 trees are slated to be planted in the local vanilla fields to stimulate the fertility of the soil. In Peru in the region of Saint Martin in Tarapoto, San Marco will plant some 2000 trees of various species in an agroforestry project in the heart of the Amazon. Agroforestry is a land use management system in which wild species of trees grow alongside and within land used for crops or pasture. It is becoming very successful in the southern hemisphere. Meanwhile the Nariño region of Colombia will benefit from the plantation of 1,100 trees to combat deforestation, protect biodiversity and to assist in the economic development of the local population.

San Marco’s Terra Mia coffee also enjoys the Rainforest Alliance certification seal. The Rainforest Alliance certification seal can be used only by farms and companies that meet the rigorous criteria of the Sustainable Agriculture Standard, part of the Rainforest Alliance certification program. Reforest’Action is committed to ecosystem regeneration through the use of field experience, local communities science and technology, according to its self-stated mission. Terra Mia is available ground or as beans to grind yourself. As usual we recommend the latter for an even richer taste. ©Trish Valicenti for The Gourmet Gazette. https://www.sanmarcocoffee.com/
