Crystal clear star-filled nights, a fiery sky upon emergence over a landscape in myriad shades of green, stylish shade-giving hats and original garments cut from inimitable cloth. Welcome to the Indonesian island of Java, a land that harbors a certain mystery, a certain glamour. And with a population of over 150 million residents, Java is home to more than half of Indonesia’s population and is the most populous island in the world. French photographer Marius Moragues has captured the uniqueness of this iconic island in a coffee table book in English entitled Beyond Java.

The book was released last month to celebrate and to coincide with 70 years of bilateral relations between France and Indonesia. Beyond Java takes you on a unique journey into the culture, humanity and beauty of the island. The book is the first in a series entitled Beyond, devoted to the various island of the Indonesian archipelago within the context of a project entitled Imperfect Frame, an Indonesia heritage photo project.
