It is in the small Saxon town of Glashütte that the elegant, elaborately finished and highly accurate timepieces of the house of Glashütte Original are fashioned. It was back in 1920, that master watchmaker Alfred Helwig gave the tourbillon, one of the most challenging complications in haute horlogerie (high watchmaking), the appearance of weightlessness by anchoring the mechanism on one side only. Today, nearly a century later, Glashütte Original is presenting Mr. Helwig’s invention in an advanced and highly sophisticated version for the manufacture has succeeded for the first time in combining a flying tourbillon with a second-stop mechanism, zero reset and minute detent, allowing for the time to be set with great precision with the Senator Chronometer Tourbillon – Limited Edition. This world first edition in platinum is limited to 25 pieces and officially certified as a chronometer.

The turning of a tourbillon cage is fascinating to watch all the while keeping in mind that the tourbillon was originally intended to enhance the precision of a watch. Glashütte Original underscores this with the second-stop mechanism, zero reset and minute detent ensuring that the minute and second hands are synchronized, allowing the time to be set with great precision for the tourbillon’s rotating cage stops the moment the crown is pulled and since the second hand is mounted on the cage, it also stops immediately. Outfitted with a 42mm case in platinum, the manual winding Senator Chronometer Tourbillon – Limited Edition timepiece presents a Calibre 58-05 movement with highly refined finishes and has a power reserve of 70 hours. Beneath the eye-catching galvanic blue dial, fascinating views emerge from the combination of different levels and finishes.
