Paris, France —Actor, humorist, television writer and cartoonist, his best-know work is his inimitable comic strip devoted to Le Cat, Le Chat in French. Philippe Geluck has sold more than 14 million albums worldwide and Le Cat (Le Chat )is one of the ten bestselling Franco-Belgian comic strip series of all time. Le Cat (or ‘Le Chat’ as it says on his birth certificate) was born on 22nd March 1983. The leading Belgian French-language daily, Le Soir asked Philippe to come up with a cartoon character. Le Cat was literally born overnight, appearing the next day in the daily supplement, and quickly became the paper’s mascot.

Since then, there have been more than 8,000 Cat Cartoons in the paper, and they have been syndicated in many French dailies and magazines, as well as appearing in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Greece, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Italy, Finland and Iran. The last cartoon appeared in Le Soir on Le Cat’s 30th birthday.

Since then Philippe has also been spending more time on his original passion – art – creating paintings, drawings and sculptures and exhibiting them not only in Belgium but around Europe. This lead to a groundbreaking exhibition of his cat sculptures on the Champs-Elysées in 2021 (see: https://thegourmetgazette.com/2021/03/26/a-curious-and-catchy-cat/  ) and more recently a hugely successful, fun and joyful retrospective of his catworks produced by the Tempora agency at the Musée Maillol in Paris.

Philippe Geluck is known for his Cat drawings but less so for his sculptures. « I have been making them for 25 years, but infrequently, » he noted, « I made a three-dimensional Cat for the first time in 1988 using clay. The clay was moulded and a wax model made from it, then a bronze, » he recalls.  To find out more about Philippe, Le Cat and how to connect with them go to:https://lechat.com/en/homepage/ To find out more about the Musée Maillot in the posh part of the posh 7th arrondissement go to: https://museemaillol.com/en/
