This is cognac with a twist. The venerable French brandy has been given a new taste sensation with fresh ginger roots, a touch of water and a sparkle of sugar. Please allow us to introduce you to made in France Sweet Ginger, an uncanny creation from the venerable house of De Luze, founded in the Charente region of France in 1822. It has a burnished yellow orange color and a bouquet of lemon zest, fresh citrus fruits and ginger combined with the deep woody scents of double distilled cognac. It’s heady, spicy and refreshing all at once, a perfect cocktail combination. Enjoyed as a cocktail or just simply on the rocks, the liqueur has a volume of just 24% alcohol, much lower than a traditional straight cognac. You can serve it as a ginger mule over ice with sparkling water and a ginger or lemon zest or as a ginger spritz with a dash of sugar syrup, sparkling water and sparkling wine. The taste comes from the good earth of the Charente region of France where cognac is traditionally made from the ugni blanc grape variety which is transformed and double distilled into that legendary brandy known as cognac. To make the Sweet Ginger, the cognac of the house of De Luze is then infused in the still for 72 hours with the fresh ginger roots. Water is added in and the blend is slowly distilled for more than 15 hours. Founded by the De Luze family the house is today owned and operated by the Boinaud family and so it remains a family-run house and the house’s symbol, the wolf, remains to this day. ©Trish Valicenti for The Gourmet Gazette
