La Plaine Saint Denis, France — This is a unique spot, one of the most unique in all the land. This is the l’Atelier moulage GrandPalaisRmn, (the plaster casts workshop) where for over two centuries now, highly skilled and talented craftsmen and women, the workshop’s sculptor-casters, have been reproducing some of the greatest works of art found in museums of the world, the treasures of the Louvre (which created the workshop) and the Palace of Versailles are among the institutions that work hand in hand with this unique workshop. It meticulously reproduces sculptures with a thorough respect for the original artwork. The masterworks that are re-produced here trace the entire history of sculpture from prehistoric times to the present. To celebrate its 230 years of savoir faire and service to institutions and museums, the l’Atelier moulage GrandPalaisRmn is auctioning off 230 of its casts in all sizes and from various periods, both plain casts or casts that have been embellished with a patina to mimic the original giving them an appearance of marble, terra-cotta or bronze. The expert patinors work with museum curators to verify the model. Some of the pieces up for auction date from the 19th century and among the museum reproductions bidders can acquire is the Smiling Angel of the Reims cathedral or Michelangleo’s Pieta. Estimates range from 50 euros into the four figures. This exceptional auction is being organized in conjunction with the auction house of Leduc Enchères and it is open to all, in person or online on April 26th at 2pm. The pieces will be on exhibition in the workshop of the l’Atelier moulage GrandPalaisRmn from April 23rd through to the 25th.
