Wine of the Week: A Viré-Clessé in a Class by Itself

The Orfèvres du Vin (which literally means the goldsmiths of wine) have just been awarded a prestigious gold medal at the annual national farm show in France, winning in their category at the Concours Général Agricole de Paris for their crisp Viré-Clessé Vieilles Vignes 2022. This wine, made from old growth Chardonnay grape variety plants that grow in sun-drenched slopes is dry, yet fruity and it pairs perfectly with goat cheeses, or fish and seafood, like a lobster risotto. Viré et Clessé are two villages in southern Burgundy and AOC wines, or designated label of origin wines within the Mâcon-Villages wine producing region. Made exclusively from the Chardonnay grape variety, the Viré-Clessés are uniquely refreshing white wines that can offer up a fine and sophisticated cocktail wine time or accompany a meal of fish or shellfish. As in all of Burgundy the name of the climat, or parcel where the grapes were grown is often inscribed on the label. The wine is produced by the collective Orfèvres du Vin, originally called Charnay-lès-Mâcon, created in 1929 and which brings together some 70 members who strive to create the finest in white wines in the hilly Mâconnais, a delightful region nestled between Burgundy to the north and the Beaujolais to its south. Named for the town of Mâcon, it is known for producing good value, excellent white wines made mainly from the Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc grape varieties.
