Every year the great champagne house Krug brings out a new version of its Krug Grande Cuvée and its inimitable Krug Rosé. The Krug Rosé brings a certain sparkle to the holiday season or any season with its fine bubbles and delicate, elegant aromas. For this year’s version, the Krug Rosé 29th Edition, 29 different wines ranging over a period of five years — with the youngest being from 2010 and the oldest from 2017 — were assembled together with reserve wines from four other years. The magical blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier grapes created an aroma of blackberry, strawberry and cherry. But before the champagne is ready to emerge onto the dinner table or during cocktail hour, it is aged at least seven years in the Krug cellar. Founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, today it is the sixth generation of the family that perpetuates the tradition of creating fine champagne each and every year. It was the fifth generation of the family that brought out the first rosé in 1976.

Meanwhile, the house also brought out this year its Krug Grande Cuvée 173rd Edition, a generous champagne described by some as a symphony given its composition blending no less that 150 wines from 13 different years, the oldest being 2001 and the youngest 2017. It, too, contains the classic grape varieties of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier, albeit in different proportions to its distant cousin the rosé. Its intense tempo is visible in its deep yellow color and its generous taste of ripe citrus fruits and peach syrup. It, too, is aged for at least seven years in the Krug Cellar. The magic begins in the early spring of each year when all of the members of the tasting committee join the house of Krug’s cellar master Julie Cavill, tasting about 250 wines of the year and some 150 reserve wines that can come from up to 10 different years, all emanating from the vast holding of the house’s reserve wines.
