The name tourmaline comes from the Sinhalese words tura mali, which mean “stone of mixed colors.” And what sets tourmaline apart from other gemstones is that it occurs naturally in myriad colors. Pink or red tourmaline takes its color from the manganese found in certain tourmaline deposits. Tourmaline is mined in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Mozambique, Madagascar, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the U.S.—primarily Maine and California, according to the American Gem Society.
