They’re back. Actually they never went. Those multi-faceted light-catching disco balls are usually associated with discos and disco music back in the 70s and 80s. We have distinct memories of the one that hung over the dance floor at New York’s Studio 54. And of course in the famous scenes with John Travolta et al. in Saturday Night Fever. But disco balls are actually much older than the disco craze having been widely used in nightclubs already back  in the 1920s.  And today a company in Louisville, Kentucky still makes this icon of the dance floor, the silver screen and maybe once upon a time, your bedroom. Omega Mirror Products, according to their website,  « Manufactures the highest quality Mirror Disco Balls in the world. We use only real glass mirror squares and top quality for materials. All Mirror Disco Balls are handcrafted in the U.S.A. » By the by, the disco balls for Saturday Night Fever and Studio 54 were made at Omega Mirror Products by master disco ball maker Yolanda Baker.

And while the Omega Mirror Products disco balls are truly the real McCoy, the myriad reflector was first patented in Kentucky, once again Kentucky, by Louis Woeste of Newport, Kentucky, in 1917. Alternatively called mirror balls or glitter balls, they remain one of those seriously fun and one of kind items. So for back to school or back to work or back to a Teams meeting you might want to have a disco ball pencil case on your desk. The Dutch design house of Hema is featuring an eye-catching pink pen and pencil sized disco ball. Hema department stores were founded in the Netherlands in 1926 and at the time the staff in the department stores spoke mainly in French. Today they are found in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Austria and Germany and on-line. ©Trish Valicenti for The Gourmet Gazette
