Ultimate luxury emerges in a magnificent table clock into which the houses of Bugatti, Jacob & Co. and Lalique have brought their inimitable talents together. The clock revolves around the iconic radiator grille of the house of Bugatti while the Swiss watch making house of Jacob & Co. has created the inner and outer workings of the clock. The finishing touch is a case in moulded French crystal from the house of Lalique. This masterpiece of craftsmanship was three years in the making as the research and development was conducted and perfected by the three luxury houses to create this Bugatti Calandre Table Clock.

Jacob & Co. pays design tribute to the artistic savoir faire of Bugatti starting with the Bugatti Type 41 Royale with its two sculpted dancing elephants, an artistic tribute to Rembrandt Bugatti, a renowned sculptor and the brother of Ettore Bugatti. The two elephants bow towards one another in a style that is characteristic of myriad clocks created by Lalique. The name of the model — Calandre, which means radiator grille in French — is a nod to the French roots of Bugatti (Bugatti was founded in the Alsace region of France) and depicts the radiator grille in the horseshoe that adorns the cars of the brand. Above this is the Bugattii badge known to collectors the world over. The watch maker also conceived an in-house movement dedicated to the Bugatti Calandre clock centered around a vertical flying tourbillon which fills the primary function of a tourbillon which is to compensate the effects of gravity on time measurement. The table clock enjoys a power reserve of eight days through the hand winding JCAM58 movement undertaken with a special key inserted into the back of the crystal case.

The crystal case was fashioned by hand in the Lalique workshops in Wingen-sur-Moder in eastern France. Founded in 1922, the manufacture has perfected techniques to obtain crystal that is incomparable in brilliance and clarity. Polishing is key as seen in the sculpted elephants that adorn the case, elephants that seem to be dancing. The crystal case is topped off with a red stone —the emblematic color of Bugatti — in the Jacob Cut which has 288 facettes. The table clock which has been brought out in a limited edition of 99 pieces is available through Jacob & Co. ©Trish Valicenti for The Gourmet Gazette
