It has already been 32 years since the Steven Spielberg movie Jurassic Park came to the silver screen bringing to life the dinosaurs that roamed and rumbled the Earth 65 million years ago. Spielberg’s 1993 masterpiece, based on Michael Crichton’s best-selling novel, would mark a new era in cinema. And so to kick off its first chapter in its series entitled A Tribute to the 7th Art, the French house of AWAKE has unveiled its Jurassic Watch in two limited edition models: T-Rex and Raptors. The project is the house’s creative tribute to cult classics which aims to revisit the films that shaped our childhood and continue to resonate today.

AWAKE brings together French creativity, the excellence of Swiss watchmaking and the Métiers d’Art — arts and crafts professions that participate in the watchmaking process. In the case of the Jurassic Watch this involves the layered lacquer technique used in the house’s Sơn Mài collection, which was launched in 2024. The layered lacquer – infused with natural pigments and silver leaf, two ancestral Vietnamese techniques– creates a rich play of depth, texture, and reflection which the house describes as capturing the hypnotic stare of these ancient beasts that have ruled the collective imagination of the world for centuries. Both editions are assembled in La Chaux-de-Fonds, the cradle of Swiss watchmaking. Inside beats the G101 automatic movement from La Joux-Perret, offering robust performance and a 68-hour power reserve.

The T-Rex version features a fiery orange dial with a gradient finish, alive with vivid reflections. Just above the 6 o’clock marker, two applied rip marks are a reference to the T-Rex’s fearsome two-clawed forelimbs. On the case back, the quote “Spared No Expense” is engraved – a line delivered repeatedly by John Hammond, the eccentric billionaire who brings dinosaurs back to life on Isla Nublar. His vision, grand and unrestrained, gives rise to Jurassic Park and the ensuing chaos.

The Raptors version is inspired by the film’s cunning predator, the Velociraptor. Its dial shimmers with layered shades of green, capturing the eerie intensity of the creature’s gaze. Three applied claw marks slash across the surface, echoing the raptor’s lethal precision. The watch draws us back into one of cinema’s cult moments: the kitchen scene in which the raptors brilliantly stalk and chase their prey. The case back bears the inscription “Life Finds a Way” in a nod to mathematician Dr. Ian Malcolm’s prophetic warning in the Jurassic Park film franchise.

Both watches have been brought out in a limited edition of 50 pieces each and in one of these 100 boxed gift sets sits a genuine Carcharodontosaurus tooth, from a dinosaur that dominated North Africa between 93 and 100 million years ago, and known as one of the biggest predators ever recorded. This 4-inch (10-centimeter) tooth, discovered at Kem in Morocco, will be accompanied by its certificate of authenticity. ©Trish Valicenti for The Gourmet Gazette
