Paris, France — She used the simplest of materials like paper, cloth and ink to create her powerful collages and box assemblages. The German-American collage artist Hannelore Baron was little known during her lifetime. Born in Dillingen, Germany in 1926, the daughter of a Jewish textile merchant, she would grow up during the rise of Nazism, witnessing the violence of the times, in particular Kristallnacht or the Night of Broken Glass, which would inflict life-long trauma on her. Her works are composed of signs, symbols and numerals that « recount the unimaginable and explain the inexplicable, » in her own words.

The works of Hannelore Baron are being presented for the first time in France at the Galerie Zlotowski on the Left Bank. The pioneering gallery, through the support of the Estate of Hannelore Baron and the New York-based Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, is showcasing 30 of her collages made between 1977 and 1986. The show offers a discovery of her unique and deeply moving collage-making technique. She would recuperate the smallest pieces of paper to give them a second life in her works. Hannelore Baron died of cancer in 1987. Her works live on in some of the world’s most prestigious art collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Guggenheim, the MoMA and the Whitney in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. The Galerie Zlotowski, which was founded in 1998 and is specialized in the avant-garde movements of the 20th century, is offering Parisians and visitors to Paris an opportunity to discover these quiet yet powerful works.
