Paris, France — The Galerie Mitterrand officially inaugurated a second venue at 95 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré last December 12thin in the heart of gallery row in the 8th arrondissement of the French capital. This new luminous space, spread out over two floors, kicked off its début with an exhibition devoted to the Chilean artist Roberto Matta in collaboration with the Matta family and the galerie Paradiso Terrestre. The show brings together some 30 works of paintings, sculptures and drawings emanating from each decade from the 1930s until the 1990s. The artist drew his inspiration from myriad sources and notably his travels around Latin America. With the support of André Breton , one of the founder’s of the Surrealist movement, he worked between Europe and the United States which facilitated his encounters with the pioneers of Surrealism (his works are present in the Surrealism exhibition underway at the Centre Pompidou). The show underscores the singularity of the artist’s techniques for his works are illuminated, almost psychedelic making him somewhat of precursor of science fiction in the art world. The Matta exhibition is on until December 21st at the new venue at 95, rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, 75008 Paris. Meanwhile you can view the fragile natural world created by the artists Anne and Patrick Poirier at Jean-Gabriel Mitterrand’s original venue in a private mansion in the Marais at 9, rue du Temple, 75003, until January 18th.
