The America’s Cup, the world’s most famous regatta and regarded as the oldest trophy in international sport, came to a rousing close last Saturday with New Zealand bringing home Auld Mug, as the coveted trophy is named, for the fifth time. This year’s racing took place in Barcelona where the challenger INEOS Brittania Team raced against the cup defender Emirates Team New Zealand with the New Zealand team victorious with a 7-2 race winning margin, dashing Great Britain’s hopes one more time for a win it has never won since the race was founded in her very own territorial waters back in 1851. For there is no second place, only the winner. The house of Omega, which is also the official timekeeper for the event, has been a partner of the New Zealand team since 1995. And to mark the event, the house brought out a commemorative watch for the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup: The Seamaster Regatta Omega’s America’s Cup Watch, a watch for sailors the world over.

The Swiss brand’s timekeeping role at the celebrated regatta has led to the release of countless watches, designed specifically to meet the challenges of high-speed boat racing. Launched to mark the 37th America’s Cup, OMEGA’s 46.75 mm Seamaster Regatta is fully equipped for life at sea. It is an instrument watch for sailors featuring both analogue and digital displays. Cased in grade 5 titanium, the Seamaster Regatta is outfitted with invaluable tools, including a moon phase indicator, a chronograph, a sailing logbook, temperature gauge, accelerometer, 3 alarms, and of course a regatta race function.

“Our new Seamaster Regatta belongs to the same family of watches as the Speedmaster X33. It’s essentially a multifunctional tool that you can wear on your wrist. As its name makes clear, this is the perfect timepiece for sailors, and the timing is right for its release. The great boat race in Barcelona is sure to inspire sailors all over the world, and this watch is all about meeting their needs,” said Omega’s President and CEO Mr. Raynald Aeschlimann.

Reading a timepiece can be a challenge under sail, especially in turbulent seas, so the house has ensured that the Regatta can deliver data at a glance. The watch’s unique dial has an LCD display with black markings on a white-grey background to show its multiple digital readings, as well as hour, minute, and central seconds hand, which can be cleared from the display when in backlit mode to increase the legibility of the digital readouts. In addition to its digital and analogue readings, the Regatta can provide a sailor with audio cues. Turning the watch over reveals a wave pattern case back designed along the principles of “Helmholtz resonance”. It has a resonating cavity to help increase the volume of the alarms which also serve multiple functions. Special to The Gourmet Gazette. https://www.omegawatches.com/
