Paris, France — A resounding range of vibrant resonance has come to Paris in the large format oil paintings by Brandon Deener in an exposition fittingly entitled Résonance. These paintings explore the splendor of music, its instruments, particularly the horns, and celebrate the jazzmen behind them: Miles Davis on the trumpet, or John Coltrane with two saxophones (Soprano and Tenor). These are bigger than life works that step out of the wall and resonate with anyone who sees them. Boldly figurative, the players in the paintings comme alive.

One of the great canvases of the show, Players of the Horn pays tribute to Horn Players, the 1983 work by Jean-Michel Basquiat. Two legendary figures of jazz emerge on the canvas: Charlie Parker playing the saxophone and Dizzy Gillespie on the trumpet. Deener’s work represents the musicians in delightful pastel tones while the background is a dream-like undulating curtain. These works clearly show the act of blowing into the horn which for Deener represents a call for social, political and spiritual awareness. Brandon Deener was born in Memphis, Tennessee and lives and works in Los Angeles. His works can be found in major galleries and museums throughout the world including The Crocker Art Museum and The Fairfield University Art Museum. Résonance is being presented by Tony Shafrazi/Gallery Without Walls and Doriano Navarra/Galerie Enrico Navarra at the Galerie 75 Faubourg until September 20th. ©Trish Valicenti for The Gourmet Gazette.
