Moments in Time: Precious Amber Time

It is one of the most mysterious of the natural elements on the face of the Earth. It almost seems to come alive. Baltic amber is the fossilized resin of myriad plants particularly conifers that grew along the Baltic Sea coast some 44 million years ago, imparting upon it a pre-historic quality. This slow process of transformation gave rise to this precious, highly sought after – remember the Amber Room – rich material which is highly aesthetic. And now in what is believed to be a first in watchmaking, Baltic or tiger amber is being used by the pioneering house of Arnold & Son to create an exceptional dial. Amber enjoys a range of different colors and the house has chosen a rich moiré yellow of this exceptionally rare material for its Double Tourbillon White Gold, amber edition timepiece. Double Tourbillon White Gold draws on the rich appearance of the stones that Arnold & Son explores and so after imperial jade, malachite and aventurine, the brand has now adopted amber. The amber rendition is a one-off piece.

Double Tourbillon White Gold perpetuates this duality by displaying local time on the small dial at 12 o’clock, calibrated by Roman numerals. It is complemented by a display of the time in another location at 6 o’clock, using Arabic numerals. These two dials display hours and minutes that are completely independent, and accurate to the minute. The house dials in white opal perfectly set off the main amber dial and the timepiece enjoys a power reserve of 90 hours. Arnold & Son was founded in 1764 in England by John Arnold and was re-launched in Switzerland in 1995. ©Trish Valicenti for The Gourmet Gazette
