Paris, France — As we head into couture season, and on the heels of a very royal springtime we take a look into the world of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya of the kingdom of Thailand. More than a crowned princess in the line of succession, she is an accomplished athlete and talented fashion designer dedicated to the traditional arts and crafts of Thailand, notably the preservation of Thai silk and Thai traditional hand-woven textiles and works to guarantee the future of Thai weaving villages across the country. She follows in the footsteps of her beloved grandmother Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, currently 90, the wife of King Bhumibol, one of the world’s longest reigning monarchs, acceding to throne in 1946 at the age of 19 and the longest reigning at the time of his death in 2016 at the age of 88.  His granddaughter, Princess Sirivannavari, did her undergraduate degree in Thailand and obtained a Masters in design at the L’ Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne (IFM) in Paris, France.

After working with leading luxury houses, among them Christian Dior, Giorgio Armani, Balmain and Bulgari, she would eventually establish her own fashion company Sirivannavari. And here her Asian heritage is incorporated into western design. Her support of the Thai silk industry is a corner stone in her interest in fashion and she often uses the beautiful Thai silk in her creations.  The princess has also studied  Kimono printing and applied art at Kinsai Yusen in Kyoto, Japan.

Her brand, which she founded in 2005, blends Western style with Thai heritage and it is an ardent supporter of the Thai textile and craft industry. The house which creates haute couture, bridal couture, ready-to-wear, menswear and a full range of accessories, has its own in-house embroidery artisans, the Sirivannavari Atelier and Embroidery Academy. Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya presented her Fall/Winter 2023/24 collection in Paris earlier this year during the celebrated Parisian ready-to-wear fashion week. The collection embodies the house’s feminine essence with masculine silhouettes, prints, silk, lace and chiffon and high craftsmanship. ©Trish Valicenti for The Gourmet Gazette.
